Prior to 1984 the American Style Smooth and Rhythm divisions were danced together in one unified championship. This was known as United States National Professional American Style Championships. Beginning in 1984, this event was split into two separate categories, Rhythm and Smooth

American Style Rhythm consists of these five dances: Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, and Mambo.
